Microneedling FAQs

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that rejuvenates the skin by using fine, sterilized needles to create thousands of controlled micro-injuries. These tiny punctures activate the skin’s natural healing mechanisms, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for maintaining the skin’s structure, firmness, and youthful appearance. Over time, microneedling helps to improve the skin’s texture, tone, and overall health. The procedure can be safely performed on multiple areas of the body, including the face, neck, chest, hands, and even areas affected by scarring or stretch marks.

Microneedling is used to address a wide range of cosmetic and dermatologic concerns. It is often used to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and early signs of aging by promoting firmer, smoother skin. Individuals with acne scars, surgical scars, or traumatic scars may benefit from the skin remodeling effects of microneedling. It is also effective for minimizing enlarged pores, evening out skin tone affected by hyperpigmentation, melasma, or sun damage, and improving the appearance of stretch marks on various parts of the body. In some clinical applications, microneedling has been used in combination with other therapies to assist with certain types of hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia.

When performed by the experienced dermatology team at Biscayne Dermatology, microneedling is a safe and effective procedure for most patients. The risks of infection or complications are low when the procedure is carried out in a sterile, clinical setting by one of our qualified professionals. Microneedling may not be appropriate for individuals with active infections, certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, or those prone to keloid formation. A thorough consultation is performed prior to treatment to ensure patient safety and optimal results.

On the day of treatment, a topical numbing agent is applied to the skin to minimize discomfort. After sufficient numbing has been achieved, the practitioner uses a microneedling device—either a roller or a motorized pen-like tool with adjustable needle depths—to pass over the skin in a precise, methodical pattern. Some practitioners may also apply serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) during the procedure to enhance results, as the micro-channels facilitate deeper absorption. The entire session generally lasts between 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size and number of areas being treated. After the procedure, the skin may appear red and slightly swollen, resembling a moderate sunburn.

The number of recommended treatments varies depending on the severity of the condition being treated, the patient’s age, and individual’s skin response. For general skin rejuvenation and improvement in texture and tone, a series of three to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is typical. At Biscayne Dermatology, a personalized treatment plan is developed to achieve the desired outcome.

One of the advantages of microneedling is the relatively minimal downtime compared to more invasive skin rejuvenation procedures. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a day or two. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to each patient to ensure optimal recovery.

While some patients notice improvements in skin texture within a week, collagen production and skin remodeling continue for several weeks following treatment. Most patients begin to see noticeable improvements in skin tone, texture, and firmness within three to four weeks, with results continuing to improve over time. Because microneedling stimulates natural collagen production, final results may take up to six months to fully develop.

Microneedling is frequently combined with complementary treatments to enhance overall results. Common combinations include microneedling with topical hyaluronic acid serums, growth factor serums, vitamin C serums, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Applying these substances during microneedling can boost hydration, support tissue repair, and amplify collagen production.

At Biscayne Dermatology we may also offer microneedling with radiofrequency (RF), which delivers thermal energy deep into the dermis to further tighten and firm the skin. Consultation with Dr. Shagalov ensures that any combination therapy is safe and tailored appropriately.

Thanks to the application of a topical anesthetic before treatment, microneedling is generally very well tolerated by patients at Biscayne Dermatology. During the procedure, patients typically feel only a mild vibration or prickling sensation. Areas with thinner skin, such as around the eyes and mouth, may be slightly more sensitive, but the procedure is not considered painful by most individuals.

Side effects from microneedling are generally mild and temporary. Patients can expect some redness, swelling, and sensitivity for a few days. Less common risks include infection, prolonged inflammation, hyperpigmentation, or small areas of scarring if post-care instructions are not followed. The team at Biscayne Dermatology takes all necessary precautions to minimize these risks and ensure a safe, positive experience for every patient.

Most healthy adults seeking skin rejuvenation are candidates for microneedling. Ideal candidates are individuals who wish to improve fine lines, scars, enlarged pores, or uneven skin tone without undergoing invasive procedures. Patients with active skin infections, severe rosacea, open wounds, or a history of poor wound healing may not be good candidates. A comprehensive consultation will determine whether microneedling is appropriate based on individual skin type, concerns, and goals.

The team at Biscayne Dermatology provides detailed post-care guidelines and is available to answer any questions during the recovery period. Contact Biscayne Dermatology to schedule your consultation today.
