Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create small punctures in the skin. Microneedling works by triggering the body’s wound healing cascade in response to the small punctures. This stimulates collagen production, which can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, melasma, sun damage, enlarged pores, skin laxity and stretch marks among other skin concerns.

The device, called a dermaroller or microneedling pen, contains multiple tiny needles ranging in size from 0.5mm to 3mm in length.  The procedure is typically done on the face, but can also be done on the neck, chest, and other areas of the body.

During your consultation with Dr. Devorah Shagalov, she will review your medical history and discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals and assess your skin.  She will answer your questions and explain the procedure and the risks and benefits as well as any pre or post treatment care that may be needed. She will determine whether microneedling or another procedure is most appropriate treatment for you.

Before the procedure, the skin is cleaned, and a numbing cream is applied to reduce discomfort. During the procedure, the microneedling device is rolled over the skin in a specific pattern, creating small punctures to stimulate collagen production, and the production of new skin cells.

Microneedling is generally considered safe for most people, however, it can cause redness, minor bleeding, and slight discomfort during the procedure. After the procedure you can expect to experience redness, swelling, and even mild bruising for a few days after the procedure.

It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided to you, which includes no makeup for 48 hours, using a sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure to prevent any pigmentation problems.

There are several potential benefits of microneedling, including:

  • Improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reducing the appearance of acne scars
  • Reducing appearance of enlarged pores
  • Treating hyperpigmentation and sun spots
  • Improving skin texture and tone
  • Tightening and firming the skin
  • Enhancing the effectiveness of topical skincare products
  • Improving melasma
  • Improving the appearance of stretch marks

Microneedling can be combined with other treatments for maximal benefits:

  • Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma. This can be used to enhance skin rejuvenation, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to treat melasma.
  • Microneedling with Tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid is a medication that can be taken in oral form to improve Melasma. It is used in topical form with microneedling for the treatment of Melasma.
  • Microneedling with 5-Fluorouracil. This combination can be used to improve the appearance of vitiligo

Side effects are rare and minor including infection and discoloration.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure, in office procedure. Recovery time is short.

Generally, you can expect to experience redness, swelling, and even mild bruising for a few days after the procedure. Most people are able to return to normal activities within 1-2 days and any residual effects should resolve within 7-10 days.

Microneedling can be an effective way to improve the appearance of the skin, but it’s not a one-time solution. A series of sessions may be recommended, with maintenance treatments done periodically to maintain the results.

Most people see significant improvements to lines, wrinkles, skin texture, skin laxity and acne scarring. Results from microneedling can vary depending on the individual and the severity of their skin concerns.

While microneedling is considered to be safe for most people, it’s not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided by those who have active acne, open wounds, or keloid scars, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also important to choose a reputable practitioner.
