Earlobe Repair

What is earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair is a minor outpatient surgical procedure usually performed in a doctor’s office under local anesthetic and can take between 30 minutes to an hour to complete. The procedure typically involves making incisions in the earlobe, removing any damaged tissue, and then suturing the earlobe back together to help it heal.

There is minimal discomfort during recovery that can be treated with oral medication. A small pressure bandage will be applied to the repair to protect the earlobe during the first few days after surgery. Patients will receive complete postoperative care instructions to facilitate healing. Fourteen days after surgery, the sutures will be removed. There will be a scar, but Dr. Shagalov uses an impeccable suturing technique to ensure the most aesthetically appropriate outcome and minimize the scar.

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the damage and reconstruction, but typically patients can return to normal activities within a few days. Once healed, the earlobe will appear more normal in shape and appearance. Earlobe repair has a high success rate, and most patients are extremely satisfied with their results once fully healed. Six weeks after surgery the ear can be pierced again.

Earlobe repair is performed to repair or reconstruct torn or stretched earlobes. A torn earlobe can be caused by multiple piercings too close together, wearing heavy earrings, stretching, gauging, or other sudden trauma. It can also repair an earlobe that has scar tissue from a piercing.

The risks associated with earlobe repair include bleeding, infection, and poor healing. However, these risks are generally considered to be low. Some people may also experience temporary pain, swelling, or numbness after the procedure.

Benefits of earlobe repair include:

  • improving the appearance of torn or stretched earlobes
  • allowing the person to wear earrings again
  • restoring the normal shape and size of the earlobe
  • improving self-esteem and confidence

It’s important to note that the person should avoid wearing heavy earrings and avoid stretching the earlobe again after repair, as this can cause the earlobe to tear again.

You can get piercing after the earlobe is healed but the scar tissue may interfere.  Re-piercing after repair should be done only after the ear is completely healed after at least six weeks.
